IN CHARACTER
Name: Andyr Prince (ANPR-BT-V-00)
Canon: Original
Canon Point: Beginning of the three House Resistance raid
Age: 24

History: Verse Primer | Hapsburg Info | Character History (best if read in that order, tbh)

Personality:

There's a schism in the person that Andyr Prince is, that's glaringly apparent, gaping and bleeding, but goes ignored by the man himself. At the core of who Andyr is, is a 17 year old boy who desperately needed something to sustain his sanity, to find a means to cope with the nightmare that he'd become trapped in for the rest of his life. As it happened, letting go of that idea of humanity he'd wanted so badly to keep and concept of self had been the best way to protect himself from it, in an odd way, and yet, a person can never truly erase who and what they are, not completely. For the sake of keeping himself together and functioning, Andyr cannot and will not recognize that truth. Tell the lie frequently enough, and with enough fervor, and you can start to make it true. That's the tool Andyr has perfected, and the crutch that's at the center of his person.

The strongest generalization you can make about who Andyr is, both before his time at Hapsburg, and during it, is that he is a storm of intense emotion, all day everyday, to a point that seems exhausting. This applies to all of his emotions - Andyr loves as strongly as he hates, whether he means to or not (and this causes a lot of issue for him on various occasions). After his mental episode in the isolation cell a few months into his detainment, what is most painfully, strikingly obvious in Andyr's emotional spectrum is rage. As much as it is a coping mechanism for him, it's also Andyr's means of standing up for what is right, and doing what he thinks his father would want him to - to continue telling them no, to continue fighting them, to never ever treat this like any less of the atrocity that it is. Consequently, this also makes him a super douche socially. There's a reason Andyr had so many friends before Hapsburg, and only manages to keep about three after. It's this. Paired with that rage is a kind of self-destruction that's both defiant and masochistic. When told "if you fuck up, we will electrocute you", Andyr makes a point to fuck up and fuck up hard, making the threat have to be backed up, but it's also a means for Andyr to prove to them and to himself that he isn't afraid of what they'll do to him. Physical pain is something Andyr's very well adjusted to, especially given how his KN gene has adapted to it (and continues to adapt, with each injury he suffers, building his tolerance further and further), but it's the more personal, psychological tortures that tend to break him. Reactionary is putting it kindly, when talking about Andyr, as his responses tend to be wild and unpredictable, unconcerned for how reasonable he's being or how offensive or frightening he is to anyone else watching. He's very much driven by impulse and gut feeling, and as most of those impulses stem from anger, they tend to come out pretty bad. Beneath all of that, there's a deep, deep hopelessness and despair that Andyr is constantly refusing to acknowledge, always trying to cut off that part of him. Regardless of how hard Andyr fights, how much he rails on others to do the same, how often he tries to escape the Houses, Andyr does not actually believe he'll ever make it completely out of the Houses' control. Because of that, when he fights, it's for the concept and principle that he should be fighting this with all that he has, rather than a realistic belief in a brighter future.

Hope is a difficult concept for Andyr, in that repeatedly losing it becomes more and more devastating with each failure. As much as Andyr has been able to build up his tolerance to the atrocities visited on him, the dehumanization and indignity, his mental fortitude is incredibly lacking, for things with more depth that physical pain and horror. He breaks easily, and when he breaks, it's a shitstorm. Thus, despite all that Andyr preaches about fighting for a better tomorrow, for your own self-worth, and because there should be protest against something this wrong, he does not actually reserve any hope for himself, and when asked if he really believes they'll make it out of the Houses someday and be free, Andyr lies. Believing it's what the people around him, the victims of the Houses, need to hear, he excuses himself for it and uses that rationality to avoid thinking on it any deeper, but the truth of the matter is that Andyr decided and accepted that he would die in Hapsburg around his first year there, before his suicide attempt. It had been a large part of the reason behind his personality 180, as Andyr believed he wouldn't get another chance to function outside, in society, as a normal human again, and settled with the idea that what he was damaging and purging something from himself that would not ever be needed again.

What Andyr had attempted to do with himself, in his ISO cell, was essentially psychological self-deconstruction. He's wanted to "rebuild" himself as a rage/hate/violence machine, not only for the purpose of becoming a nightmare and a vengeful wraith for the Houses, but for protecting the delicate parts of himself that could not process and accept what was happening to him, and what would continue to happen to him. He can't despair over not being a person if he decides to make himself something inhuman to begin with, and that's what he'd attempted to do. He'd forgotten (or, tried to) things like softness and kindness, trust and affection, dreams and hopes for his own future and the pain of losing family, made himself numb to common etiquette and the more compassionate end of morality, convinced himself it no longer applies to him and no longer has consequence for him. Andyr wanted to turn his body into more of a concept than a soul, and repeated and repeated it until he started to really believe it. Becoming savage and wild, he'd pushed himself to horrific brutality, and decided no line is too far for him. Do what you have to do to become the nightmare that's needed to make these people, and these complacent Mice, start to fear him. Behind all of this is the singular concept: "they didn't make me, I made me". The Houses are all about taking human beings and making them into automatons that can be programmed and sold. Andyr'd decided he would be ruined by the things he did to himself, rather than the things Hapsburg did, and that, mentally, gave him some kind of ounce of control when he'd desperately needed to feel like he had something of agency left. Despite all of this, Andyr is still the teenager he was when he was taken, still wants and feels those things, but it's very, very buried and suppressed. When thoughts of it crop up, Andyr aggressively pursues any kind of distraction, even as far as banging on the window of his wall, writing things on the floor, religiously reading his encyclopedia on marine life (which, weirdly, becomes something of a calming ritual). Andyr tells himself it's all for The Cause (if he can't be free, he can make himself a weapon, and that is at least serving what's right/would make his father proud), though what's largely unrecognized by Andyr and left unsaid is that it's much more a coping mechanism.

'Idealistic' is something both accurate, and yet, contrary to Andyr's nature, but considering that Andyr's entire nature is one side of him trying to cancel out the other, that sort of suits him. He has this intense refusal to accept the state of things and his lot in life, is completely unwilling to ever stop arguing/fighting it, as he sees that as complacency, and complacency as surrender. When you stop saying 'no', they start putting 'yes' in your mouth. It's this belief he has clung to, that he must, in ever single situation, rebel, and refuse to accept a bargain for mercy. Freedom or death, etc. His defiance and rebellion and violence is much less a means to try to break free, more just making a point, standing up for himself and putting as much damage into the Houses and the people serving them as he can, because it's more an issue of principle for Andyr. He does not actually believe he'll ever really be free from Hapsburg, even if he were to escape the House. Andyr's convinced that, because of his value as a Template, he would be tracked down forever, constantly on the run, and never know peace. Only get those who try to protect him dragged into the line of fire. He fights, now, because it is what should be done, not because he thinks he has any chance at winning, and finds all punishment he has for that the cost of being the person he ought to be - a person that deserves to continue living. Pride is immensely important to Andyr, as it's one of his driving forces, and something that he clings to to keep himself going. He can have his own self-worth and pride and that's something that's up to him to keep, cannot be truly taken, even if he loses. Andyr desperately needs to feel strong, and capable, or he starts to crack. If he lets that go too deep, he won't recover from it. He needs others to know, the ones he cares about, that he fought it as well. That he didn't go down easily. It staves off the shame in him. As much as Andyr acts like an uncaring dick, and will be just fine being called selfish and uncaring, he's actually a deep kind of selfless, mostly because he doesn't believe there's anything he's entitled to or will be entitled to in the future, thus, he will easily sacrifice himself to make a distraction to get someone else out of the Houses. Even people he hates, like Miray, not because he secretly likes them, or feels sympathetic, but because it's what should be done - something he'd learned from his father and held onto like a life line. Mikal is the one to lead the Resistance, because Andyr doesn't think he's capable, can't believe in that future as much as Mikal does, and thinks he's better off on the inside, creating mayhem when it's needed. He also refuses to leave the House completely without Alva and Posie free and safe.

As you've probably realized by now, Andyr is a hypocrite. He holds onto all these harsh philosophies and rigid morality that he's so certain of, but you'll notice it's not applied to Alva (who works for House Gloriana) or Posie (who plays compliance to make her life easier) and people he comes to care for. He bitches at the more docile Mice for giving up on hope, for not fighting their captors, and yet, Andyr'd already done the same thing years ago. It's simply that he continues to fight for the ideal of it, rather than the end result. In his attempts to protect himself, Andyr does not let himself dwell on things too personal, or too self-incriminating - he just goes with gut feelings. He's very much the "do what I say, not what I do" sort of person, as he believes there's different set of rules for himself. He's already ruined, and not going to be in a situation different from captivity/fighting the Houses constantly, thus he's needed to be someone who says and represents these things, but doesn't hold himself to the same standards. What's heard and seen from him is more important. In that same category, Andyr is terminally narrow-minded in terms of what's acceptable and what isn't. Over the years in Hapsburg, he's become less focused on understanding individuals, and more on black and white, generalized views based on a certain set of criteria. All Mice not rebelling, all House employees willfully working, all non-KNs not protesting. Andyr tends to decide for others what they want/should want/what they know. You will absolutely hear the phrase "with us or against us" from him, and Andyr doesn't pause to consider misunderstandings or miscommunication in arguments or conversations. He's unforgiving, hard to gain trust with, easy to lose it. As a teenager, Andyr did have the capacity and leaning towards empathy and sympathy, but that's something he actively rejects, now.

Despite being a twenty-four year old man, Andyr still behaves much like a seventeen year old kid. He can be deeply childish at times, both in an endearing sense as well as the more frustrating negatives associated with it. Being that Andyr'd been taken from the outside world at age seventeen, and then put in what's essentially a vacuum (but with torture), he never really developed emotionally or mentally past that age. On the positive side he's energetic, excitable and curious - all things he'd been before, as well as constantly needing to be active. That's both due to hyperactivity and the fact he processes grief, despair, frustration, hurt and shame through physical activity, be it exercising or leading his handlers on a free run chase around the House grounds, or extreme and brutal violence. On the negative, bitterness is a strong influence on Andyr's behavior, both with the House operatives and with people like Alva, Miray and Val. He can be incredibly petty and immature about slights, or perceived slights, or even just vague thoughts he'd had about a person, acting on it as if it's truth. Andyr's mind is intelligent and tactical, but he's emotionally driven more often than not, making him lean into impulse, rash decisions and little patience.

Though this is probably painfully obvious by now, I feel like I need to at least make the note - Andyr is traumatized. He's victim to many things associated with the kind of abuse he's gone through; depression, suicidal inclinations, guilt, anger, denial, PTSD and all the symptoms that come with that. However, unlike what one might normally associate with these things - shutting down and retreating from the world - Andyr is loud about it; no one's talking about what happens, no one's looking at it, no one's regarding it so they don't have to feel guilt for standing aside doing nothing while this happens to human fucking beings. He'll climb onto every rooftop in the city and shout it at the clouds - the violence, the forced operations, the torture, the cage fights, the spinal ports, the lack of rights, being used like cattle, etc etc. Except for one thing: the sexual abuse. It's the deepest violation he's experienced, the one thing that haunts and terrifies him more than the rest, and the one thing he cannot shout at the top of the hills. Andyr has mentioned this to all of one person, probably, that being Posie. Alva is aware because he'd have had to stitch Andyr back up from it. As a rule, he doesn't talk about it, doesn't allow himself to think on it long, but the first time it happened, that was the snap from crushing depression, to all out rage machine, so it is something intrinsic to who he is and why he does what he does.

As for general disposition, Andyr tends towards dry, sardonic, and morbid when calm, if not standoffish and rude. He acts like a teenage boy, enamored with awesome things, judgmental of weirdness, overreacting, moody and mercurial. Social and confident as a teenager, Andyr carries into that who he is now in terms of getting in peoples' faces and their business. He's made up names and backgrounds for all of his guards, despite having been corrected, and sarcastically chatters with them about their made up lives, asking things like "hey, Frank, how's the wife", when the guard is named Joe and he's been divorced for eight years. When Andyr's feeling more riled up, he can go into the extremes of whacked. He'll be laughing too loud, acting too hysterical, switching rapidly to berserk kinds of violence, holds no standards for social propriety for himself or politeness, so he does whatever he feels like at the moment, and looks like a crazy person. None of it matters, because he does not matter, and that's a crushing kind of reality to him he can only deal with by being accepting of it in an unhinged, twisted kind of way. Thus, making most people (Mice and handlers both) think Andyr's gone completely around the bend.

Contracts: Due to how "contracts" are kind of bullshit legality red tape in Andyr's world, he'll mostly just laugh when presented with one, and sign because he doesn't think it matters whether he does or not - people who do whatever they please with him, regardless of what he does or doesn't agree to. Andyr's also been treated pretty well by the people who've greeted them on the Moira - Adrien, Steve, Jean - and with Val and Alva around and also agreeing to the contracts (if they happen to get in with him), Andyr will be more willing to sign. On top of that, the alternative is being stranded on some foreign planet in the middle of bumfuck nowhere space, so, considering Andyr still has people back home to get to, and if he can, bring here where they can be safe, he'd rather make the agreement to work. Or sign his name on some meaningless datapad and then do whatever he wants later. (He'll probably comply just fine).

Abilities/Skills:

When the KN gene activates, it sets in rapid, free mutation in the direction of making the body more hardy and evolving it towards something that can survive in the environment the world has become, to resist the illnesses that have come to affect the human genome. As such, there are some common enhancements many KN1s experience, such as tissue density and accelerated metabolism, but it does vary from person to person. On top of what occurs naturally, the make up on the KN gene and what it does to a human's genetic structure also allows for a body to be surgically manipulated, and given manual enhancements on top of what crops up naturally.
NATURAL KN ENHANCEMENTS:
  • STRENGTH Having activated at 12, Andyr naturally developed more dense muscle tissue as he matured and grew into a muscle strength that far surpassed typical humans his age and size. As he'd already been a very active, athletic child to begin with, he'd only just compounded and compounded this enhancement, like training any other muscle would exponentially increase it's output.
  • DENSITY/RESILIENCE With the boost to tissue, bone and muscle density that the KN1 gene granted, Andyr's body became naturally resilience - difficult to damage, difficult to move. It made him sturdier, and effectively heavier. He isn't affected by his weight as his base strength also jumped up with it, but Andyr's weight is typically around 214 lbs. Andyr in particular is chosen as a Template for his body's impressive natural resilience.
  • HEALING/CELLULAR REGENERATION/METABOLISM Increased healing/regeneration/metabolism is a trademark KN1 enhancement, present to some degree in most KN1s, as it's the main facet of the gene that makes KNs more evolved and survivable than typical humans. As such, Andyr can heal rapidly in comparison to a baseline human, though his isn't quite so advanced as Alvary's is. If he has the bones broken in his hands (smaller one), they'll likely piece back together and repair in a matter of hours, though not instantaneously. If it's something like a femur, it'll take longer, maybe a day or so. His skin will naturally try to heal itself over when cut (making surgeries very obnoxious), and he metabolizes drugs at an absurd rate, needing much higher doses, administered through the ports at his spine to be truly long-term effective.
  • DURABILITY/EXTREME PAIN TOLERANCE The main selling point of Hapsburg Mice is their pain tolerance and durability. Both between what the KN gene naturally augmented within Andyr's body and the rigorous experiments and torture visited upon him while within Hapsburg, Andyr's developed an incredible threshold for pain, and ability to push past injury to continue moving forward. Seeing as Hapsburg is one of the most prestigious military providers on the globe, this trait is of high value and demand.
MANUAL KN AUGMENTATIONS:
  • SECOND STRENGTH BOOST Because Andyr is overkill, around 16 years old, he'd gone into the lab of one of his father's friends to get a second strength boost to his already enhanced power. Now, he's capable of bench pressing up to about 1500 lbs (that's pressed up overhead). He can probably deadlift more (not overhead, just lifted from the floor to about the hips).
  • SPEED/REFLEX BOOST Andyr is fast. Very fast. Because he can compound the power he packs by adding speed to his potential force, he'd gotten this augmentation done before Hapsburg as well, in preparation to go fight his way to rescuing his sister, with his father.
  • METAL GRAFTED TO JAW He bites. Like, a lot. Andyr has the kind of vicious tenacity in fighting against manhandling that demands he lashes out with every inch of what's available to him, and that happens to include biting, a lot. Enough that Alvary started to worry about the stability of his jaw and teeth, and gave him an augmentation to reinforce his jaw. This is the only operational augmentation he's had within the Houses.
  • SHARPENED CANINES This isn't actually an augmentation and doesn't have anything to do with the KN gene. Andyr'd just gotten his hands on a medical file at some point and started to use it to sharpen his teeth - specifically the upper and lower canines, as well as the two neighboring teeth on each set. Thus, there are about 12 teeth in Andyr's mouth that are unnaturally sharpened. He might have done more, if Alva hadn't have snatched the file away from him before he was able.
GENERAL SKILLS: As Andyr'd been brought into Hapsburg at 17, before finishing high school, he has very little in the way of real skills, outside of athleticism, and tony jaa style mauy thai combat. The strengths/weaknesses might tell you more about that, but basically, he really has about two things he's good at, and that's it. Plus, weirdly extensive knowledge of fish, and how to take care of babies/young kids, because he did a lot of babysitting for his neighborhood. Idk.

Strengths/Weaknesses:
enhanced strength/speed/durability
accelerated healing
tony jaa style hand to hand combat ability
tony jaa-ing comes with parkour kind of maneuvering and gymnastic shit
pain tolerance
pragmatic
some kinesiology knowledge, like what you'd expect a personal fitness trainer to know
good with kids??
he reads???
knows a lot about fish for some fucking reason????
literally nothing else, he's so worthless outside of knowing how to hurt people

zero skills outside of being combat ready and a fish expert
for real, he was abducted at 17, he can barely do advanced algebra
no cooking, no cleaning, no work experience, just what a kid would've learned up to their senior year of high school
insubordinate as hell, just on the rule that he doesn't like being told what to do, puts him in bad spots in normal society
kneejerk fear/aggression reactions, tends to react first and figure out the situation later so that gets him in trouble often
will freak the fuck out if he's brought into any kind of lab or medical center (can be soothed by presence of Alvary or maybe possibly Valarie)
not too good at self-preservation
poor directional skills. he memorized the layout of one building for six years, and gets lost everywhere else, idk.

Items:
» lil scifi detainment pajamas (there are pants, just not in that pic) that are like bedsheet thin
» jacket he stole from a Hapsburg guard (a little bloodstained)
» scifi looking handgun with an empty clip
» chained cuffs around wrist and ankles made of a very high tensile strength metal (chains broken between cuffs, but still hanging free)
» house-arrest type tracer anklet still attached to his right ankle but completely dysfunctional
» handmade shank
» a distinct lack of shoes
